Born in Braga, José Sá developed at Marítimo before joining Porto, where he served as understudy to Iker Casillas, then won titles at Olympiacos in Greece. He moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2021 and became their first-choice goalkeeper in the Premier League.
