Ao Tanaka came through the Kawasaki Frontale academy and won the J1 League before moving to Fortuna Dusseldorf and then Dusseldorf-rival rivals in Germany, building a reputation as a tidy, goal-getting midfielder. He scored Japan's winner against Spain at the 2022 World Cup, then moved to Leeds United, helping them to the Premier League.
